Why I Enjoy Practicing Family Law
Adoption, Custody, Divorce, Individual, Support | November 3, 2017
Practicing law, particularly family law, often is a “contact sport.” Some cases can be a battle of wills, with both parties unwilling to concede any ground and contesting every legal issue. Within this battle of wills, however, family law is an area where an attorney can truly make a difference in a client’s life. Thus, it is for these three reasons that I truly enjoy practicing family law:
- I get to help people at low points in their lives. Growing up, I was talented in many fields of study and could have chosen from many different professions. However, I decided I wanted to be a lawyer because I wanted to help people through difficult situations. There are ultimately no more trying times for most people than when dealing with a family law issue. Whether facing a divorce, support, or custody issue, these issues are very stressful and taxing. It is quite rewarding to guide people through such difficult times and help lift the burden of such trying circumstances.
- My personal experience gives me an inner drive to resolve family law issues. When I meet with people with family law issues, I know what they are going through. The reason for this is because I am the product of a divorced household. I empathize with what clients are experiencing because I have lived through it growing up. I believe God ultimately prepared me for a career in practicing family law through my own parent’s divorce. Consequently, it gives me great satisfaction to help individuals through difficult family law issues.
- Family law is a ministry. Ultimately, it is important to remember that the most important part of any profession is to help spread God’s grace and love in the world. Practicing family law is no different. In the simplest of terms, practicing family law is an opportunity to spread the gospel message to hurting people. There are few other professions in which a person encounters other individuals on a daily basis who are so in need of God’s love. Thus, it is an honor, a privilege, and quite humbling to be able to practice family law and make a positive impact in the world.
