(Published in the Fall/Winter of 2010 Newsletter)
Is that $250 divorce a smart idea? Before you pay, beware! Usually these are done in a remote county, like Potter or Cameron County. What the ads don't tell you is the nightmare that will result if there are any (and we mean ANY) other issues. For example, if you have any marital property (cash, savings, property, etc., acquired while married), or any marital debt (any debt incurred by either party while married) this will have to be dealt with by the courts sooner or later. If your spouse has debt you don't know about, you could still be responsible to pay it. Also, if there are children, custody and support will need to be addressed as well. Handling such matters alone is like operating on yourself. Sure, you can do it, but we wouldn't recommend it. Call our experienced domestic lawyers for advice instead.
