Victim of Identity Theft?
(Published in the Spring/Summer of 2007 Newsletter)
What should you do when you think your identity has been stolen, such as if your wallet is stolen? First, if any credit card, driver’s license, social security card, or other card with identifying information has been stolen, file a police report immediately. If the police seem reluctant to write a report, demand that they do. This will show that you were diligent in trying to limit any lose. It also may be required to cap your liability for fraudulent charges.
Second, call all three major credit reporting agencies immediately: Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; Experian 1-888-397-3742; and TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289. Report that identifying information has been stolen and request that a fraud alert be placed on your name. Also, call the Social Security Administration fraud line at 1-800-269-0271 if your social security number has been stolen.
Third, report the theft to your credit card company, the Department of Transportation (for driver’s licenses), and any other card issuer. The key to doing this is to have the toll-free number and your account handy. But where do you get these numbers if your cards have been stolen? Simple: photocopy all the cards you carry in your wallet or purse and keep the copy at home. You will have all the right numbers to immediately report the theft.
